Introduction

IG Markets claims to be a world leader in CFD and option trading. This broker is known for its very large product range and wide selection of advanced platforms and apps. With a foundation date of 1974, it is one of the oldest brokers. They have more than 178,000 customers worldwide and offer access to more than 16,000 markets. Reliability and customer involvement are two strengths of IG Markets. In 2019 IG even won the prize for best international CFD broker.

IG Markets focuses on customers who want to trade in the financial markets via CFDs, turbo certificates or options. These leveraged products offer opportunities to invest in both rising and falling markets. In addition, IG offers the unique possibility of actually buying shares or ETFs without leverage.

Target audience

IG is a broker with a very broad target group. Because of their wide range of platforms, you can choose from both user-friendly and the more advanced platforms. With their wide range of education and large product range, IG is suitable for both beginning and experienced investors.

Is IG Markets reliable?

IG Markets is a very reliable broker. Your money is kept at a separate custody company, which ensures that your money is always safe in the event of bankruptcy of IG Markets. The company is even listed on the stock exchange, indicating that it is very reliable. This broker is regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA). The FCA maintains strict regulatory measures, known as the client money and ownership rules (Client Assets Sourcebook - CASS). IG Europe GmbH is regulated by the Bundesanstalt für Finanzdienstleistungsaufsicht (BaFin). The BaFin supervises compliance with the relevant rules for protecting client funds (§84 WpHG, §16 MiFID, §10 WpDVerOV). In the highly unlikely event that IG Markets goes bankrupt, your assets are guaranteed up to £85,000.

Trading instruments

IG focuses primarily on investing in CFDs, options and forex. In addition, it is possible in the United Kingdom to buy shares or ETFs. The offer in shares consists of all important UK shares and a few smaller shares. At IG Markets you can trade CFDs in forex, stocks, indices, ETFs, commodities, bonds and crypto currencies. The range of CFDs is huge as you can see below.

Trading platform

IG Markets has a varied range of investment platforms available. Special apps have been developed for mobile phones and tablets.

  • Web-based platform: the platform is very user-friendly and suitable for both starting and experienced investors. It is a very beautiful and intuitive platform. You can easily set it up to your own wishes and you can choose from a dark and light layout. You can create watch lists and the search function is ideal. All necessary order types are available, and there are many different alerts that you can set. A unique feature is that you can even automate your trades in the web trader. The trading platform works best on Google Chrome and for correct graphs you need Adobe Flash Player. In short, this is one of the best platforms that a CFD investor could wish for.
  • Trading apps: there are trading apps available for both android and apple devices. Just like the web trader, the apps are user-friendly and everything is available to invest quickly and easily on the move.
  • MetaTrader 4: with IG Markets you can also use the universal MetaTrader 4. MetaTrader 5 is not yet available.
  • Advanced platforms: for the highly active investors or day traders, IG Markets optionally has a number of advanced platforms available, such as Direct Market Access (DMA) and APIs.

Spreads

CFDs on indices are fairly low, while forex and equity spreads are relatively high. Another plus is that the inactivity allowance of £18 per month only starts after 2 years. With other brokers this is often already after 3 months.

Demo account

Just like most other CFD brokers, IG Markets also has a free demo mode available. Get to know the advanced trading platform here so that you are ready for the real thing.

In short

IG Markets excels in their professional trading platforms and very wide range of investment products. In addition, they are reliable, customer-oriented and offer a great deal of education. This broker is therefore ideal for both starting and experienced investors.

CFDs are complex instruments and come with a high risk of losing money rapidly due to leverage. Between 74-89% of retail investor accounts lose money when trading CFDs. You should consider whether you understand how CFDs work and whether you can afford to take the high risk of losing your money.
